Under the baton of conductor CHEN Xieyang, this evening's performance features Dmitri Shostakovich's monumental Symphony No. 11 in G Minor “1905”. Universally acclaimed as a symphonic epic and a cornerstone of the twentieth-century orchestral repertoire, the work draws its thematic impetus from the turbulent events of the 1905 Russian Revolution, seamlessly intertwining the grand sweep of history, the collective fate of the populace, and the composer’s profound humanistic vision. Structured in a continuous four-movement narrative performed “attacca” (without pause), the symphony unfolds on a panoramic scale, balancing searing dramatic tension with sombre, expansive lyricism. Through its potent brass sonorities and densely layered string textures, Shostakovich constructs an immersive soundscape of extraordinary physical power and emotional immediacy. With his characteristic poise and deeply penetrating musicianship, Maestro CHEN probes the work’s dramatic core, illuminating the profound depth and compelling force of modern symphonic art.
