Kavin Jay

Kavin Jay，本名 Kavin Jayaram，1980年2月25日出生于马来西亚吉隆坡，是马来西亚印度裔。他于1997年毕业于吉隆坡卫理公会男校，随后前往英国纽卡斯尔的南泰恩赛德学院深造，2001年毕业。之后，他成为了一名海洋工程师，还曾获得马来西亚国家石油公司的奖学金。

 

早期发展

他的第一场演出并不成功，Kavin 事后坦言自己当时完全不知道如何写笑话或如何在台上自信地表演。但他没有放弃，开始在吉隆坡各个酒吧进行开放麦演出，不断尝试不同的风格和段子。2008年，他与几位朋友共同创立了“马来西亚青年喜剧人”（Young Comedians of Malaysia，简称 YCOM），为新兴喜剧演员提供支持平台，并定期在 TimeOut KL 的“Comedy Thursday”等演出中亮相。2009年12月，他在 Comedy Club KL 的 Wacky X'mas 演出中担任开场嘉宾，从此成为该俱乐部的常驻表演者。

 

Netflix 突破

2018年是 Kavin 职业生涯的转折点。当时 Netflix 已经确定了两位马来西亚喜剧演员（Harith Iskander 和 Fakkah Fuzz）录制特辑，正在寻找第三位。Kavin 在为 Harith Iskander 的 Netflix 特辑录制现场做暖场时被 Netflix 团队看中，受邀录制了自己的首个 Netflix 单口喜剧特辑《Kavin Jay: Everybody Calm Down!》（2018年2月2日上线），录制地点在新加坡。该特辑时长约53分钟，内容基于他在马来西亚俱乐部打磨了12年的段子。这个特辑在 The Wrap 和 IndieWire 的2018年度 Netflix 特辑排名中均位列前十。

全国巡演

Netflix 特辑成功后，Kavin 于2018年8月启动了首次全国个人巡演“Anger Management”，与 TGV 影院合作，在八座城市（八打灵再也、吉隆坡、梳邦再也、古晋、纳闽、怡保、槟城和新山）的影院中进行演出。2022年，他推出了回归演出《I Am Sorry I Shouted》，探索家庭关系和过往经历等更严肃的主题。

 Personal Background

Kavin Jay, whose full name is Kavin Jayaram, was born on February 25, 1980, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is of Malaysian Indian descent. He graduated from Methodist Boys' School in Kuala Lumpur in 1997 and later continued his studies at South Tyneside College in Newcastle, UK, graduating in 2001. He subsequently became a Marine Engineer and had been a recipient of the prestigious Petronas Scholarship.

Early Years

His first show was not a success — Kavin later admitted he didn't know how to write or deliver a joke, or appear confident on stage. But he persisted, performing at open mics in various pubs around Kuala Lumpur, experimenting with different personalities and material. In 2008, he and several friends founded Young Comedians of Malaysia (YCOM) as a support platform for up-and-coming comedians, and they performed regularly at venues including TimeOut KL's Comedy Thursday. In December 2009, he performed as the opening act at Comedy Club KL's Wacky X'mas show, headlined by Irish comedian Dave Callan, and became a regular performer there thereafter.

 

Netflix Breakthrough

2018 marked a turning point in Kavin's career. Netflix had already confirmed two Malaysian comedians (Harith Iskander and Fakkah Fuzz) for their specials and was looking for a third. While Kavin was warming up the audience at Harith Iskander's Netflix special taping, the Netflix team was impressed and offered him his own special. Kavin Jay: Everybody Calm Down! was recorded in Singapore and released on February 2, 2018. The one-hour special featured material he had honed over 12 years in local clubs. It was rated in the top 10 of both The Wrap and IndieWire's rankings of 2018 Netflix specials.

He later released a second Netflix special, Live in Kuala Lumpur (2021).

National Tours

Following the success of his Netflix special, Kavin embarked on his first-ever nationwide tour, “Anger Management,” in August 2018, in collaboration with TGV Cinemas, performing across eight cities (Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Kuching, Labuan, Ipoh, Penang, and Johor Bahru). In 2022, he returned with I Am Sorry I Shouted, exploring more serious themes about family and past experiences.

 

 Comedy Style

Kavin is known as “Malaysia's grumpiest comedian,” celebrated for his rapid-fire, sharp, and unapologetic style. His official bio humorously states: “Being Malaysian Indian, Kavin Jay has lived life with a severe disability and was always destined to be angry and easily irritated. He was voted Malaysia's grumpiest comedian because he complains about everything so that you don't have to. You're welcome!”

His comedy is known for its sharp social observations, unique perspective on life in Malaysia and beyond. His style has been described as “intense and shows a warped sense of love, life and liver.”

 

 Personal Challenges

 Kavin has dyslexia and ADHD. He has spoken about how dyslexia helped him develop a unique sense of humour in a CreativeMornings talk, turning these challenges into material for his comedy and offering a different way of looking at the world.

 

 Other Activities

 Beyond stand-up, Kavin is a radio announcer and former co-host of The REDjam and The Really Really Late Breakfast Show on Red FM. He is also the co-host of The Macha Men Podcast alongside fellow comedian Keren Bala Devan.

He was also involved in the setting up of Crackhouse Comedy Club, a significant venue for the Kuala Lumpur comedy scene.

In film and television, he has appeared in productions including Harimau Malaya: The Untold Journey (2024) and Murder by Moonlight (2022).

 

 International Presence

Kavin has performed at numerous international comedy festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Hong Kong International Comedy Festival, Perth Fringe Festival, and the Harare International Festival of Arts in Zimbabwe. He has toured extensively across Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, the UK, Vietnam, China, and beyond. In 2024, he made his Edinburgh Fringe debut with a brand-new show, Unsolicited Advice, exploring the well-meaning yet often unwanted advice from family and friends in Asian households.
